“Outskirts” by Doug Johnson and Ann E. Coulter is on view at Artspace 304 from November 18
– December 23. In “Outskirts,” Johnson and Coulter channel their location of central Illinois,
exploring the landscape of the Midwest through different styles of painting. Coulter’s naturebased paintings and drawings are intricately detailed, allowing the viewer to become immersed
in wooded areas. Johnson’s landscapes investigate the complexity of color and light across
Midwest pains and townscapes. Their focus and styles complement each other, creating a
powerful visual experience of Midwestern landscape.
Coulter shares what drives her choices: “With a life-long appreciation for the subtle landscapes
of the Midwest, my nature-based paintings and drawings are explorations of the rich and
detailed beauty that comes with carefully looking at the world around me. In an effort to grasp
such overwhelming places, I focus on a closer look, providing me with the opportunity to be
deeply immersed and connected with my surroundings. The revelations that result from this
practice are always surprising and thought provoking.”
Shedding light on his work, Johnson states: “The process of painting is central to my studio
practice and these artworks serve as a reflection and exploration of my deeply rooted
Midwestern experience. For me, the process of creation provides an opportunity for the
exploration of place, to investigate the complexity of color and light, to express sometimes
complex feelings, and to shine a metaphorical light in the darkness.”
