Join Southern IL Democratic Socialist in celebrating Labor Day with a short, outdoor performance of “Waiting for Lefty,” a play written in the 1930s about New York City taxi drivers deciding to go on strike. Dynamic, rousing, and inspiring, “Waiting for Lefty” continues to resonate with working people everywhere. The performance will be led by faculty and students from SIU’s theater program. Potluck and socializing before and after the performance.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) believes that working people should run the economy and society democratically to meet human needs, not to serve the interests and bank accounts of the wealthy few. The DSA is not a political party; it is a labor0-oriented non-profit organization made of members whose ideological views range from social democracy to democratic socialism. DSA is a community- and student-based organization that uses a variety of tactics, from legislative to direct action to fight for reforms that empower the working class.
The event will take place at the Town Square Pavillion on Sunday, September 5 from 4-7pm. The performance of “Waiting for Lefty” will start at 5. We will be using CDC protocols for group gatherings, encouraging masks and social distancing for all attendees. Please bring your masks, chairs or picnic blanket and your own refreshments.
