Shawnee Showdown Film Screening & Music by Hugh DeNeal in Harrisburg, Friday, Dec 30 at 7 PM
This documentary film, recalling past conflicts and environmental victories, underscores an uncertain future for Illinois’ Shawnee National Forest
A screening of the documentary film, Shawnee Showdown – Keep the Forest Standing, by SIUC School of Arts and Media professor emeritus Cade Bursell, will be held at 7 PM, Friday, December 30, at Three Mile Hideaway Cannabis Lounge, 22 S. Main St, Harrisburg, Illinois. Legendary local singer/songwriter Hugh DeNeal is excited to be performing in his hometown of Harrisburg for the first time in nearly 20 years. Hugh will play a solo set following the film. Refreshments provided by Sun, Water, and Soil. Three Mile Hideaway is a 21 and older cannabis consumption lounge.
The film retraces the 30 plus year battle over commercial logging within the Shawnee National Forest. With the effects of climate change intensifying, activists are once again asking tough questions about current and proposed logging in the Shawnee National Forest and public land use in general. Knowing that mature forests sequester more carbon, how do we keep our forests standing? Will our Illinois and central hardwood forest treasures be protected? Find out more about the newly proposed Shawnee National Park and Climate Preserve.
Following the screening there will be a Q&A with environmental activists featured in the film and who remain active to this day. There is a $10 cover charge, with Three Mile Hideaway donating half of proceeds to Shawnee Forest Defense, in support of the Shawnee National Park and Climate Preserve proposal. The event is sponsored by Shawnee Forest Defense, Friends of Bell Smith Springs and Three Mile Hideaway.
