Reminder from the City of Carbondale that Signs are Not Permitted on the Public Right of Way
CARBONDALE –
At this time of political campaigns, The City of Carbondale reminds the community that yard-signs are only to
be placed on private property and are not permitted to be placed in the public right of way, in compliance with
code 15.4.10.9.F, that states:
F. Political Signs: Political signs are permitted in all areas of the city subject to the following provisions:
1. In a residential district no sign shall be larger than six (6) square feet per side, two (2) sides permitted.
2. In commercial districts no sign shall be larger than thirty two (32) square feet per side, two (2) sides
permitted.
3. Signs must not be on the public right of way or be located so as to obstruct the visual clearance needed
for safe vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
4. No political sign may be attached to utility poles, trees on public right of way, streetlight poles, street or
traffic signs nor fire hydrants.
If signs are placed in the right of way, they will be collected and stored by city staff. The signs can be retrieved
by the owners by calling 618-457-3251.The City does not discriminate or enforce based on candidates or party.
The public right of way is public property that is the area immediately adjacent to the roadway, as in the
“shoulder”. To verify what is designated as the right of way, check the Supervisor of Assessments GIS map
here: https://jackson-il.bhamaps.com/ or call the office of Community Development at 618-457-3251.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
