MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
SUPPORT CLIMATE ACTION AND END MILITARY POLLUTION
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2021 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, November 6, 2021, noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
The Peace Coalition, as a member of World Beyond War, signed a petition to the participants of the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland to “set strict greenhouse gas emissions limits that make no exception for militarism, include transparent reporting requirements and independent verification, and do not rely on schemes to “offset” emissions.”
Militarism is a top contributor to the global climate crisis. Military activities are often exempted from key environmental regulations, such as the Kyoto Protocol. War and preparations for war are not just the pit into which trillions of dollars that could be used to prevent environmental damage are dumped, but also a major direct cause of that environmental damage.
The U.S. military is one of the biggest polluters on earth. Since 2001, the U.S. military has emitted 1.2 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases, equivalent to the annual emissions of 257 million cars on the road. The U.S. Department of Defense is the largest institutional consumer of oil ($17B/year) in the world.
As the environmental crisis worsens, thinking of war as a tool with which to address it threatens us with the ultimate vicious cycle. Declaring that climate change causes war misses the reality that human beings cause war, and that unless we learn to address crises NONVIOLENTLY we will only make them worse.
Activities of the PEOPLE”S SUMMIT, November 7-10 will take place in Glasgow and virtually around the world. Sign the petition we are about to deliver to COP26, and check out all the events in Scotland and globally online.
The vigil will follow masking and physical distancing guidelines as updated by the state. Please wear a mask. Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on November 17, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
