MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
SOW JUSTICE – REAP PEACE
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2025 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, October 4, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
On Sunday, October 5, 2:00 -3:00 P.M. join the weekly Rally for Peace in Gaza, to call for an immediate ceasefire, a return to full U.N. and Humanitarian delivery of supplies to Gaza, and self-determination for Palestinians, not a “peace” plan that cuts them out of participation, corner of Main and Illinois Ave in Carbondale.
While the current administration gathers military leaders and in true Orwellian fashion, declares that preparing for war will bring peace, we celebrate October 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday and the United Nations International Day of Nonviolence.
Human history has been profoundly shaped by the creative power of nonviolence from Gandhi and Indian Independence to the US Civil Rights Movement, the global environmental movement, Justice for Palestine and more. Campaign Nonviolence 2025 has four calls: nonviolence toward self, others, world and earth. This year thousands of people planned and carried out actions to move this effort forward.
To tell the story, they highlighted inspiring stories such as the Birmingham Children’s March, the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, Casa de Castelar’s migrant justice work, the Capitol Crawl for the ADA, the People Power Revolution in the Philippines, and more. They fostered conversations about racial justice, civil rights, youth-led organizing, labor history, and the many ways communities have used nonviolence to create change.
International Day of Nonviolence is a chance to remind the world that peace is more than the absence of war. It is built through education, participation, and collective action. By uplifting these stories, we keep the spirit of nonviolence alive for new generations and strengthen our shared culture of peace. In the current environment, this is more necessary than ever.
Appropriate signs will be provided at the vigil, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM, Wednesday, October 15, 6pm. For a link to the meeting, contact
