MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
REMEMBER & RESPECT UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2025 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, December 6, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale. On Sunday, December 7 at 1 P.M. join the weekly Rally for Peace in Gaza, corner of Main and Illinois Ave in Carbondale. Also join the Peace Coalition at the Alternative Gift Fair, Sunday, December 7, 2-5pm at the Carbondale Civic Center.
Amnesty International states that “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a document that acts like a global road map for freedom and equality – protecting the rights of every individual, everywhere. It was the first time countries agreed on the freedoms and rights that deserve universal protection in order for every individual to live their lives freely, equally and in dignity.”
Adopted on December 10, 1948 by the newly established U.N., it was a response to the horrors of WWII. Its adoption recognized human rights to be the foundation for freedom, justice and peace. This roadmap is being brutally violated by the current U.S. administration. Examples include extrajudicial killings in strikes on boats and the military build-up to threaten a sovereign nation under the flimsiest definition of “war on narco-traffickers”, (at the same time pardoning a convicted drug trafficker, Ex President of Honduras Hernandez).
At home these principles are being violated by the racial profiling and rounding up of citizens and non-citizens in often brutal fashion, interfering in asylum processes, separating families, committing vast amounts of taxpayer dollars to these ends while many go hungry and have access to healthcare limited. These actions have to be called out and rejected by our society or render the UDHR no longer relevant.
Appropriate signs will be provided at the vigil, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM, Wednesday, December 17, 2025, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
