MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
REORDER OUR PRIORITIES—THE PENTAGON DOESN’T NEED MORE MONEY!!
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2022 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, September 3, 2022, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
The Pentagon doesn’t need more money but Congress is prepared to give a whopping $847+billion for military and national security programs for 2023. Instead of fueling the headlong race to militarize our future, reducing the military budget by $100 billion would make the world a safer place. That portion of the military budget could eliminate wasteful weapons systems and updated Nukes and instead pay for:
The clean energy and child care provisions of President Biden’s Build Back Better initiative
Powering every household in the United States with solar energy
Hiring one million elementary school teachers amid a worsening teacher shortage
Free tuition for 2 out of 3 public college students in the U.S.
Sending every household in the U.S. a $700 check to help offset effects of inflation
The average taxpayer paid $929 just for Pentagon contractors in 2021. That’s nearly half the total contribution for the military, and it’s more than five times the amount the same taxpayer contributed to K-12 education, $171.
The average taxpayer paid $62 for nuclear weapons, and just $27 for the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). What will make us healthier and safer?
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
