MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
“NEVER AGAIN” HAS LOST ITS MEANING
SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 2025 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, June 7, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale. On Sunday, June 8, 2:00 -3:00 P.M. join the weekly Rally for Peace in Gaza, to call for a permanent ceasefire and an end of Israel’s cruel blockade, corner of Main and Illinois Ave in Carbondale.
Writing in CounterPunch, Professor Gary Fields says: “The State of Israel is operating a Death Camp for the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip. By forcibly confining the Palestinians of Gaza within impassable bounds, while at the same time slaughtering and starving them within this confined space, the State of Israel has made a mockery of the slogan, “Never Again.”
After denying entry of aid since the beginning of March, an inadequate, humiliating and dangerous Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, created by Israel and the US has begun operating. While the previous United Nations-led distribution network operated about 400 sites across the Strip, the GHF, guarded by armed private security contractors working for a US company, has set up only four “mega-sites” for Gaza’s population of about two million Palestinians. Palestinians approaching the sites have been shot by the Israeli military and trampled in the desperation of starving crowds. Meanwhile experienced aid organizations are seeing their supplies spoil in waiting trucks and warehouses.
In nonviolent protest, on June 1st, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) launched the Madleen, a civilian ship now sailing toward Gaza carrying humanitarian aid and international human rights defenders in direct defiance of Israel’s illegal and genocidal blockade. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition emphasizes that this is a peaceful act of civil resistance. All volunteers and crew aboard Madleen are trained in nonviolence and are sailing unarmed, united by the shared belief that Palestinians deserve the same rights, freedom, and dignity as all people. https://freedomflotilla.org/
Appropriate signs will be provided at the vigil, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM, Wednesday, June 18, 2025, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
