MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
A CALL FOR PEACE – NOW MORE THAN EVER: REMEMBERING HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI
SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2022 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, August 6, 2022, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
August 6 and 9, 2022, will mark the 77th anniversary of the U.S.’s atomic bombing of two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombings resulted in the immediate deaths of between 129,000 and 226,000 people, with many thousands dying later from radiation exposure.
Our annual resistance to the presence and use of nuclear weapons is even more important this year as we face the tangible and immediate threats from Ukraine and the effects of climate change.
Senior Pentagon officials have recently called out Russia’s “nuclear saber-rattling.” Meanwhile, they — along with their weapons contractor buddies — are helping accelerate an arms race that only heightens the possibility of a nuclear nightmare. According to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, there are over13,000 nuclear weapons on Earth today.
Today, tensions are at their highest point since the Cold War. Congress is pouring fuel on the fire by authorizing BILLIONS to expand the U.S. nuclear arsenal, following what UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called a “recipe for annihilation.” We call for the abolition of nuclear weapons and for the U.S. to join the International Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
