MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
WILDFIRES, HURRICANES, FLOODS: THE REAL ENEMY
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2025 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, February 1, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale. On Sunday, February 2 from 1:00 -2:00 P.M. join the weekly Rally for Peace in Gaza, to celebrate the fragile ceasefire, corner of Main and Illinois Ave in Carbondale.
2024 was the hottest year on record, and 2025 is already shattering climate norms. Wildfires, hurricanes, and flooding are devastating communities across the U.S. Multiple climate catastrophes have displaced working class families and it will cost billions to rebuild lives. We cannot afford to withdraw support from international climate agreements, gut public services, abandon clean energy efforts, while declaring an energy emergency that does not exist and seeking to expand an already bloated military. This is not security.
The Rainforest Alliance reminds us that the climate crisis isn’t natural; it’s being supercharged by financial giants like Goldman Sachs and Bank of America. Since 2016, Citigroup alone has funneled $333 billion into fossil fuel projects, propping up industries responsible for deadly emissions and environmental destruction. Together, six major U.S. banks recently withdrew from the Net-Zero Banking Alliance, signaling their retreat from global climate commitments. Instead of leading the way toward sustainability, they’re caving to climate-denying politicians and prioritizing profits over our planet.
As renewable energy outpaces fossil fuels in affordability, these banks are clinging to a dying industry. Their actions risk stranding billions in assets all to put our climate at risk.
We must divest from coal, oil, and gas immediately and commit to funding a rapid, just transition to clean energy.
Appropriate signs will be provided at the vigil, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM, Wednesday, February 19, 2025, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
