MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
WE STAND WITH IMMIGRANTS: DIGNITY, FREEDOM, AND JUSTICE FOR ALL
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2022 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, December 3, 2022, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
This year’s Human Rights Day slogan is “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All” and will be celebrated on December 10. While the U.S. judges itself as a premier champion of Human Rights our actions and laws present another reality. The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois joins others working to create an Immigration system that lives up to stated values.
People seeking asylum in the United States come in search of safety from persecution, torture, and sometimes death. But upon their arrival, they face a new odyssey of navigating complex U.S. immigration laws and an increasingly restrictive environment that bars asylum seekers from winning protection. It is time that the U.S. stop evading its obligations under domestic and international laws. It is time to formulate a humane and practical system and there are a few ways we should now begin to do that:
–Pass the Dream Act and allow DACA recipients to continue enhancing our society.
–Pass the Afghan Adjustment Act and recognize our obligation to those who suffer the aftermath of a failed war.
–Reject efforts to prolong Title 42 and the selective rejection of asylum seekers, especially those being returned to impossible conditions like those in Haiti.
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, December 14 (second Wed), 2022, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
