MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL
SATURDAY, JULY 3, 2021 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois is joined by the Shawnee Green Party to sponsor the vigil at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
We will focus on the theme: SUPPORT DEMOCRACY AT HOME
The vigil will be followed by a brown-bag picnic at the Pavilion to celebrate the Forth of July, all are welcome, please bring your brown bag lunch and a chair!
As our country prepares to celebrate Independence Day on July 4, we face challenges to the protections that have brought a more diverse electorate into the halls where our political life is decided. Some of the challenges include the unlimited money that flows into elections from wealthy corporations and individuals and the multiple laws proposed and some passed that narrow access to the voting booth. We also reject the shocking attack on Congress on January 6 meant to interrupt the peaceful transfer of power and the efforts by many who believe the last election was stolen despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Americans must embrace problem solving and working together to foster a more just and equitable country capable of facing the daunting challenges that climate change, racism, poverty, pandemic and violence engender. At the same time, we must respect the sovereignty of other countries and stop meddling in other’s elections as we demand for ourselves.

The vigil will follow masking and physical distancing guidelines as updated by the state. Please wear a mask if you have not been vaccinated. Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own.

The monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on July 21, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com
