The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, March 4, 2023, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
Twenty years after the start of the unnecessary U.S. invasion of Iraq, which destabilized more than just the Middle East, we are again hearing rhetoric meant to ratchet up militarism and fear. CODEPINK helps us understand and call for a different way:
“At a time of heightened tension, we need our leaders to stay communicative and address the issue, not escalate the situation. China and Russia are no justification for further increasing the bloated military budget, despite fear-mongering and an intense national focus on outspending adversaries. Russia’s military budget is only 1/10 the size of the U.S. military budget, and the U.S. spends two and a half times as much as China does on its military.
It is time to admit we are investing in the wrong priorities, and that the primary challenges we face cannot be defeated through military might. The climate crisis, rising inequality, systemic racism, violent nationalism, and more are driving insecurity, not “insufficient” military spending. The Pentagon’s budget exceeds those of the next ten largest cabinet agencies combined. It is time to choose people and the planet over the Pentagon”.
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, 6pm. For information about joining, contact email@example.com.
