MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
PERMANENT CEASEFIRE! SHUT DOWN THE WAR MACHINE!
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2023 NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, December 2, 2023, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
While we applaud the release of hostages and prisoners and the provision of essential food, water, fuel, and other necessities of life to Gaza, it must be sustained in order to save lives and reset the cycle of violence. The advocacy group Jewish Voice for Peace says “the Israeli government’s collective punishment and unfolding genocide of Palestinians in Gaza cannot just be put on ‘pause’; it must be stopped. There is no military solution. We need a political solution — and we cannot get there until we have a full and lasting cease-fire.”
Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed and injured, most as a result of Israel’s relentless bombing of Gaza. Western governments, led by the U.S., continue to supply Israel with weapons and other military support. Weapons manufacturers have made billions of dollars from shipping bombs, guns, and missiles to Israel. The US government refuses to make publicly available any information about the amount or types of weapons it is sending, even as it requests an additional $14.3 billion in military aid for Israel.
According to Ray Acheson, director of the disarmament program of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, “learning to work together to interrupt the operation of Israeli weapon manufacturers and preventing the shipment of weapons to Israel is an essential step to abolishing the global war machine and its merchants of death. Abolishing the war machine is key to social, racial, ecological, and economic justice, as well as for the fulfillment of human rights and freedoms.”
