CARBONDALE PARTICIPATES IN CAMPAIGN NONVIOLENCE, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2023
Carbondale is one of the first “Nonviolent Cities” inspired by Campaign Nonviolence. To honor that commitment and to observe the International Day of Peace, September 21, the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois is sponsoring a Vigil for the International Day of Peace.
Participants will gather on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 5 P.M. at the International Peace Pole, planted in Friendship Plaza in Carbondale at the corner of South Illinois Avenue and Mill Street, across from the Evolve Building. The event will be a silent, respectful vigil and is open to the public.
This event is part of CAMPAIGN NONVIOLENCE ACTION DAYS, September 21-October 2nd, which will gather tens of thousands of people in the ever-growing movement to build a culture of peace and active nonviolence. The cry is for a world free from war, poverty, racism, and environmental destruction. On this day we uplift the widely-held longing for peace and condemn acts of war. More information can be found at www.campaignnonviolence.org.
“Across the country, around the world, people are coming together to see how they can end the violence that plagues our communities. It’s a time for reckoning, taking stock, and finding ways to take action that push back against the culture of violence. It’s a moment to lift up a powerfully different worldview anchored in nonviolence.”
Following the Vigil, the Peace Coalition will hold an in-person Monthly Meeting. For more information, contact Georgeann Hartzog, georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
