MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:
END THE “VORTEX OF VIOLENCE”- CEASEFIRE IN GAZA OR WIDER WAR!
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2024 NOON TO 1:00 PM and
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4 1:00 PM TO 2:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, February 3, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale. On Sunday, February 4 at 1 P.M. the Muslim community will host the weekly Protest for Peace in Gaza. Please gather at 12:45 at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave in Carbondale (Pavilion) for a Rally from 1 P.M to 2 P.M.
According to Trita Parsi, Executive vice president of the Quincy Institute: “it’s likely US interests will continue to be threatened without an end to the war in Gaza…there were zero (Houthi) attacks during the six days between November 24-30 when there was a ceasefire in Gaza…We’re seeing the casualties now on the Syrian border…to end it and protect US troops, there needs to be de-escalation and de-escalation begins with a ceasefire in Gaza”.
The US National Iranian American Council (NIAC) says the US and Iran “are now closer to the brink of being pulled into a full-blown regional war by the vortex of violence” unleashed by the conflict in Gaza. President Biden must show leadership and recognize that there is no military solution to this crisis that has only been expanded and prolonged by military escalation and a dearth of diplomacy.”
The International Court of Justice (IJC) has found it plausible that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. To further aggravate the suffering of Gazans, a suspiciously timed Israeli announcement accused 12 UN Relief workers (out of 13,000) in Gaza of being involved in the October 7 attack and the U.S, and other of Israel’s allies have suspended funding to the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA). The Israeli allegations appear to be based off of confessions made by Palestinian detainees, likely under conditions of torture. Suspending essential aid as well as the provision of military aid to Israel to continue its deadly attacks makes the U.S. complicit in the genocide.
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting of the Peace Coalition will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
