MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL: LABOR DAY AND CLIMATE ACTION: NATURAL PARTNERS

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2023 NOON TO 1:00 PM

The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, September 2, 2023, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.

The summer of 2023, the hottest on record, and the climate disasters that have already occurred tell us that climate action is required now! Rebuilding communities devastated by fire, flood, winds and the other consequences of an unstable climate must be done with the future in mind.

A report prepared by the International Labor Organization (ILO) says that 24 million new jobs will be created globally by 2030 if sustainable practices are adopted and implemented. According to the report: “Doing so will also enable millions of people to overcome poverty and enjoy improved livelihoods, in line with one of the aims of the Paris Agreement which underscores the commitment by nations to a just transition and the creation of decent work and green jobs. Some loss of employment—mostly in the petroleum industry…would be offset by jobs created in renewable energies and transitioning to a circular economy.”

A collaboration between environmental, community and labor organizations and governments making policy will ensure that workers are respected and supported while greenhouse gases are reduced and the greater community becomes more sustainable. That, not building an oversized military, should be our primary goal.

Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held in person on Thursday, September 21, 2023, 6pm at Friendship Park, Illinois and Mill St. Carbondale. For information, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
