The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, March 6, 2021, noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
We will focus on the theme: NO MORE BOMBING! CUT THE PENTAGON BUDGET! ADDRESS HUMAN NEEDS!
After only 36 days is office, President Biden presided over an aggressive bombing in Syria that may endanger diplomatic re-engagement with Iran. It was an unnecessary move which signals that hawks are in charge and is a trend that must stop now. Diplomacy is essential. With the world in need of attention to climate change, spreading pandemic, displaced populations and starvation, we cannot afford to resort to military action.
Members of Congress have created the Defense Spending Reduction Caucus with the goal to redirect 10% of military spending to invest in human needs. A cut of the Pentagon budget by 10% ($74 billion) could fund the end of homelessness in the U.S. While that is a start, much more needs to be redirected from a culture of destruction to one that focuses on healing the earth and her peoples.
The vigil will follow masking and physical distancing guidelines. Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM. For information about joining, email
