– The 25th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. CommUNITY Celebration will
take place on Sunday, January 14th at the Carbondale Civic Center. Beginning at 1:00pm, attendees will be able to enjoy refreshments while gathering information fromnearly20 nonprofit resource tables. The program will begin at 2:00pm. This event is free and open to the public. “We all have the drum major instinct. We all want to be important, to surpass others, to achieve distinction, to lead the parade. … And the great issue of life is to harness the drum major instinct. It is a good instinct if you don’t distort it and pervert it. Don’t give it up. Keep feeling the need for being important. Keep feeling the need for being first. But, I want you to be the first in love. I want you to be the first in moral
excellence. I want you to be the first in generosity.” – MLK Jr. The 25
th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. CommUNITY Celebration theme is “It starts with me: CommUNITY.” The program will honor the life, teachings and words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth from throughout the Southern Illinois region will read experts from Dr. King. The Old School Gospel Jamboree Choir will also provide additional
entertainment throughout the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to provide offerings and donations to two local
nonprofits while at the celebration. Those nonprofits include the Carbondale Warming Center and the Survivor Empowerment Center
This is a Southern Illinois celebration and residents throughout the region are
