CARBONDALE – On Friday, August 8, at 9:30 AM the City of Carbondale will hold an Honorary Street Sign
Unveiling at the intersection of East Oak Street and North Washington Street where the two new honorary street
signs honoring Elbert Simon Sr. And Kenneth “Kent” Mason converge.
North Washington Street, from East Main Street to East Fisher Street, will now hold the honorary designation
of “Elbert Simon Sr. Way” and East Oak Street, from North Illinois Avenue to North Wall Street, will hold the
honorary designation of “Kenneth ‘Kent’ Mason Way.” These designations have been made in recognition of the
distinct and impactful contributions these two individuals have made to the Carbondale community.
These are two powerful figures who demonstrated community leadership from courageous public action to
lifelong service, who have impacted generations of Carbondale residents.
The honorary street naming will not require an address change; rather, a second street sign will be placed
beneath the official street name.
For more information and media requests contact Public Relations Officer Eva Fisher at 618-713-0711.

and ease. It’s a cultural town, yet free of pretense, embracing the great outdoors as readily as urban
sophistication. Here, we are open to new ideas, experiences and cultures, so you are encouraged to both
express yourself and be yourself, in all ways. That’s Carbondale…All Ways Open… for family, fun, business,
new ideas and a bright tomorrow.”
