SIU Press has released a new biography titled “Son of Southern Illinois: Glenn Poshard’s Life in Politics and Education,” written by journalist Carl Walworth with Mr. Poshard’s cooperation.
To celebrate the release of the new book, the Varsity will host a reception at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9. Mr. Poshard also will read excerpts of the book, which will be available for purchase and book-signing.
The book begins with the subject’s childhood in a two-room home near Herald, Illinois, and the early, tragic loss of his sister; it navigates through military service in Korea; and covers Poshard’s time as a state senator, congressman, gubernatorial candidate, president of SIU, and founder with his wife Jo of the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children. The book also covers many areas of Poshard’s personal struggles with poverty and depression.
Says former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar: “Glenn Poshard has lived a remarkable life … His is an American story worth reading.”
Appetizers and a cash bar will be available. Admission is free; donations will be accepted.
