As we approach the 250th Anniversary of our nation’s birth, the police department encourages all citizens and
visitors to have a happy and safe 4th of July.
As a reminder, Carbondale City Ordinance (14-4-9) states that it shall be unlawful for any person to possess,
offer for sale, expose for sale, sell at retail, or use or explode “consumer” or display fireworks within the city
without a permit.
“Consumer fireworks” shall not include snake or glowworm pellets; smoke devices; trick noisemakers known as
“party poppers”, “booby traps”, “snappers”, “trick matches”, “cigarette loads”, and “auto burglar alarms”;
sparklers; toy pistols, toy canes, toy guns, or other devices in which paper or plastic caps containing twenty five
one-hundredths (0.25) grain or less of explosive compound are used, provided they are so constructed that the
hand cannot come in contact with the cap when in place for the explosion; and toy pistol paper or plastic cups
that contain less than twenty hundredths (0.20) grain of explosive mixture; the sale and use of which shall be

Carbondale’s Independence Day celebration features a combined City of Carbondale and SIU Carbondale
fireworks display on July 4, 2026, to honor the nation’s 250th anniversary. The event includes an evening of live
orchestral music from the Southern Illinois Music Festival (7:45 PM) and a massive fireworks show (9:15 PM),
with a rain date set for July 5. The event will be held at SIU’s Banterra Center. Please follow this link for more
