The City of Carbondale is beginning plans to rehabilitate Wall Street, from the Main Street intersection to the Park Street
intersection. The proposed project consists of the following improvements:
 Replacing the four existing traffic lanes with two plus a center turn lane – known as a “Road Diet”
 Adding bike lanes on both sides of the street
 Making mobility improvements at each intersection to bring up to current ADA (Americans with
Disabilities Act) standards
 Resurfacing of the entire street segment
The alignment of the proposed work will be confined to existing City Rights of Way.
This project has been identified as the recommended treatment for this corridor in the Wall Street Bike Lane Study,
completed in 2019. The City has been approved for funding this project through the Illinois Department of
Transportation’s Highway Safety Improvement Program grant.
There will be an informational meeting to answer questions and receive comments on the proposed design for the
project on Thursday, October 17th, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Carbondale Fire Station 1, located at 600 East
College Street. Attendants arriving by car should park in the city lot across from the fire station, on the south side of
College Street. Those with mobility issues may park in the fire station lot off Wall Street.
If you are unable to attend or prefer not to attend the meeting, contact the City’s Community Development
Department using any of the following methods:
 Verbal comments may be given over the phone by calling (618) 457-3233.
 Comments may be mailed to the City of Carbondale Development Management Division at 200 S. Illinois
Avenue, Carbondale, IL 62901.
 Comments may be emailed to Molly Maxwell at mmaxwell@carbondaleil.gov.
The City would like to receive feedback from the public regarding this project. All responses are important, including
comments expressing that there are no concerns.
