CARBONDALE –We are pleased to announce that Rob Miller has been selected as the new Fire Chief for the
City of Carbondale.

Chief Miller has worked for the City of Carbondale for the past 25 years. He began his public safety career as a
police officer for the Village of Desoto where he served three years before transitioning to the Carbondale Fire
Department in 1998. In 2006 he became an Arson Investigator and has continued to investigate fires for the past
18 years. Prior to his promotion to Captain in 2018, Chief Miller was the President of firefighters union Local
1961.
Chief Miller was promoted again in 2018 to Assistant Fire Chief where he has managed 24-hour operations for
one of the three shifts within the Carbondale Fire Department. Chief Miller has completed numerous
certifications in his career to include certified law enforcement, fire apparatus engineer, juvenile officer,
emergency medical responder, and fireground command officer school, among others.
Chief Miller will begin his new role on April 15 following the retirement of the current Fire Chief. His new
duties include managing personnel for two fire stations, emergency operations, various rescue equipment and
fire apparatus, and a rigorous training schedule. He will also lead the development of a $4 million annual
budget.
