CARBONDALE – To celebrate our ever-growing bike infrastructure and encourage cyclists of all levels to get
out and ride together, the City of Carbondale is launching, Carbondale Bikes!, a series of group rides energizing
people through outdoor movement and community connection.
The inaugural Carbondale Bikes! ride will be a ‘Winter Ride’, encouraging folks to bundle up, get outside and
ride, no matter the temperature! Held on Saturday, February 7, starting at 10 AM, riders will gather in the
community room at the Neighborhood Co-Op grocery store, located in the Murdale Shopping Center. Riders
will be asked to sign a waiver at this time. From there, the group will ride a 10-12-mile loop to include the
Saluki Greenway and Mud Line Bike Path. A mile-long segment of the ride will be on unpaved, gravel
pathway, so a mountain or hybrid bike is encouraged for this type of terrain. Parts of the ride will also take
place on streets with moving traffic. Riders are strongly encouraged to wear bright clothing and lights on their
bikes. Helmets are required for all riders.
This group ride will be led by city staff members, and seasoned cyclists, Molly Maxwell and Brice Dion.
“We’re so excited about our community’s newest bike paths we just can’t wait until Spring to show them off.
These projects represent Carbondale’s on-going dedication to providing alternative transportation infrastructure,
which enhances our sustainability efforts and our residents’ quality of life. If you have questions about the route
or preparing for a cold-weather ride, feel free to email me at mmaxwell@carbondaleil.gov.”
This is a ‘no-drop’ ride, meaning no rider will be left behind due to slower speeds, mechanical issues, or rest
breaks. In the event of inclement weather in the forecast, a decision will be made and announced via City
communications by 5:00 p.m. the day before the event. A rain date is set for Saturday, February 21st
.

“Carbondale prides itself on providing its visitors, students, businesses and residents with a unique mix of edge and ease. It’s a
cultural town, yet free of pretense, embracing the great outdoors as readily as urban sophistication. Here, we are open to new
ideas, experiences and cultures, so you are encouraged to both express yourself and be yourself, in all ways. That’s
Carbondale…All Ways Open… for family, fun, business, new ideas and a bright tomorrow.”
