Carbondale, IL – July 2, 2026 – The Fuller Dome Home Museum invites the community to celebrate Buckminster
Fuller’s birthday at Bucky’s Birthday Block Party on Sunday, July 12, 2026, from 4–8 PM at Forest and Cherry
Streets in Carbondale.
The celebration will begin with a reading of the proclamation recognizing July 12 as Buckminster Fuller Day,
followed by the official unveiling of the new honorary Buckminster Fuller Way street sign along West Cherry
Street- honoring the visionary inventor, architect, futurist, and former SIU professor who alongside his wife Anne
called the iconic Dome Home their residence. The honorary designation celebrates Fuller’s enduring legacy in
Carbondale while inspiring future generations through his innovation and bold ideas.
Live music will be featured throughout the evening with performances by Sad Max String Band, Pet
Mosquito and The J Sound closing out the celebration.
Family-friendly activities will include the Bucky Bubble Experience, community painting, and the SIU STEM
Education Research Center’s interactive 16-foot Spaceship Earth globe featuring NASA satellite imagery. The
exhibit, which has engaged more than 1,200 students and community learners this spring alone, allows visitors to
explore Earth as it appears from space and take part in Cosmic Surfing, an educational activity adapted from
Buckminster Fuller’s own teaching methods. Guided tours of the historic Dome Home will be offered continuously
throughout the evening with a suggested donation, and guests will have opportunities for a glimpse inside the
evolving Visitor Center.
The event will feature food trucks from Tater Headz Fry Co., Taste & Live, Cielito Azul Aguas Frescas, and American
Ice Cream, alongside various merchandise including the beloved Fuller Dome Home t-shirt, and dymaxion map
prints, all available for purchase. Guests will also have the chance to win a unique Bucky Gift Basket!
Funds raised will support the Fuller Dome Home nonprofit’s ongoing initiatives, including the continued care and
preservation of the historic Dome, education and community programming, and the Campaign for the New
Visitor’s Center, strengthening local engagement while building toward expanded global impact.
“Buckminster Fuller Way reflects who we are as a community,” said Elizabeth Donoghue, Board President of the
Buckminster Fuller Dome Home Museum. “It tells the world that Carbondale embraces creativity, innovation, and
big ideas. This celebration is about honoring Buckminster Fuller’s legacy while creating opportunities for people to
connect, learn, and be inspired by a vision that continues to shape our community.”
The event is free and open to the public, with donations encouraged throughout the evening. Guests are invited to
bring chairs, water bottles, and coolers to join in a relaxed evening of music, food, and community celebration.
