STILL WAITING FOR PEACE –IN PALESTINE, IRAN, UKRAINE, U.S. STREETS AND MORE
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2026, NOON TO 1:00 PM
The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, September 5, noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
In Gaza, Trump’s “peace plan” looks more like a fig leaf for the expulsion of Gaza’s population. Days after Hamas agreed to a disarmament deal, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the plan. Food, fuel and supplies are still severely restricted; suffering and malnutrition continues. More than 1100 have been killed since the “ceasefire.” In the West Bank, Israeli settler and Israeli authorities attacks have displaced thousands, with every part of the West Bank affected. Over 100 former French and British diplomats have issued a letter characterizing Israel’s actions as amounting to “ethnic cleansing.”
Nevertheless, U.S. weapons and support continues to flow. As the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran drags on, an independent estimate found that the first four months of the war, through June 27, cost $103 billion. That includes at least $2.9 billion in military aid to Israel.
As a rapidly warming climate and the resultant environmental consequences unfold, it is time to stop accelerating the harms. Diplomacy must replace bombing oil refineries, tankers, weapons dumps and civilian infrastructure. The U.S. government exports more weaponry than all other nations but two combined. While beneficial for the profits of powerful U.S. weapons manufacturers, the proliferation of weapons out of the United States is devastating to people, peace, and global stability. The American people want an end to war. Listen to them.
