Marion, IL – June 15 — On Thursday, June 25 at 6 p.m. at the Marion Cultural and Civic
Center, 800 Tower Square Plaza, Marion, Illinois, Legacy Training, Inc. presents the Third “On
One A-Chord Community Concert and Conversation. The theme for this year’s celebration of
Black Music Month is “Jazzmatazz.” Audience members will experience the uniquely American
art form known as Jazz.
Special guest is Daryl Davis, Musician, Author, Compelling Unifier, Klan
Whisperer & Award-Winning Conflict Navigator. As the only Black Cub Scout, he was attacked,
had his first encounter with racism at age ten. Pursuit of an answer led this career performing
musician on a surreal journey stemming from a chance encounter with a man who turned out to
be a member of the Ku Klux Klan. His extraordinary journey is chronicled in his first
book, Klan-Destine Relationships and the documentary about his encounters, Accidental
Courtesy. As a speaker, Daryl’s impact on audiences is profound – his TEDx talk has over 10
million views.
Also on the program is Dr. John Cooper, faculty Emeritus from Western Illinois University.
He will perform and lecture on “Louis Armstrong and the Hot Fives and the Hot Sevens.”
For thirty years, Cooper has taught ensembles, composition, applied jazz, and jazz history. He
seeks to spread the love of jazz as a builder of community.
Local Favorite and Icon, Mel Goot and the Young Lions featuring Ammiel Russell will round
out the show.
“Each year we strive to bring the best of local talent, scholars, and accomplished masters to
this event” commented Lynne Chambers, Executive Director, of Legacy Training, Inc.
Legacy Training, Inc. is a non-profit corporation dedicated to providing training opportunities
that enhance the quality of life and “alleviates poverty of the mind, body and spirit.
The event is free and open to the public, and great for audiences of all ages. We are requesting a
donation of a new children’s book to donate to the local Headstarts.
This event is co-presented by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau. Road
Scholar speakers travel throughout Illinois sharing free, dynamic presentations and sponsored
by the Healing Illinois Initiative, Field Foundation and Southern Illinois Community Foundation.
