Murphysboro’s Big Muddy Monster Festival Honors 1973 Sightings and the Ongoing Legacy of Southern Illinois Cryptid Lore

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. — Downtown Murphysboro embraces its most famous local legend on June 20 as the annual Big Muddy Monster Festival is a full day celebration of cryptids, community, and Southern Illinois folklore.

Centered in the heart of Murphysboro’s historic downtown, the festival expands across town, designed to immerse visitors in the region’s rich tradition of “high strangeness” storytelling and local pride.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the intersection of 13th and Walnut Streets will host an open-air cryptid market, which includes limited-edition festival merchandise. Throughout the day, visitors can explore a downtown shop hop, and discover themed menu-specials and offerings, to include a featured ice-cream eating contest at Small Town Scoop and a craft at Miranda’s Loom.

Programming at the historic Liberty Theatre begins at 10 a.m., featuring guest speakers exploring regional folklore, cryptid sightings, and unexplained phenomena tied to Southern Illinois.

At 3 p.m., attendees are invited to a special documentary screening of Pond Creek Monster: Bigfoot and High Strangeness, offering a deep dive into one of the region’s most talked-about legends.

Admission to Liberty Theatre programming is free, with a suggested donation supporting ongoing cultural programming and community preservation efforts.

Beyond downtown, the festival expands into a community-wide experience with a Big Muddy Monster Search Party, hosted by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), inviting participants to explore local areas tied to the region’s folklore.

The celebration continues throughout the weekend with additional events, including the Blues Brothers Block Party on Friday and an official afterparty at the Big Muddy Brewery.

Organizers emphasize that the festival is designed not only as entertainment, but as a celebration of Murphysboro’s identity. The event looks to highlight folklore, small-town culture, local business participation, and regional storytelling.
