TH ANNUAL ASQ LEAN-SIGMA CONFERENCE AT SIUC will be held Thursday, April 27, 2023 on the 2
nd floor of the S.I.U.C. campus
Student Center, 1225 Lincoln Drive, Carbondale, IL. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m., sessions start at 8:45 a.m. Continental breakfast and
lunch will be provided. A brief overview of each of the sessions offered is listed below:
Topics / Speakers:
➢ Anticipating Problems Quickly and Proactively (APQP) via PFMEA, Nick Baudino, Quality Manager, Caterpillar Inc.
This presentation will provide participants a methodology on how to identify, prioritize and mitigate risk in manufacturing processes through the application of
Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), a key element of AIAG’s Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP).
➢ Creating a Plan for Design of Experiment (DOE) Success, James Nelson Akers, Quality Manager, Woodward.
This workshop presents the background to Design of Experiment (DoE), how to setup a DoE, run it, and analyze the results for a significant factor. This presentation
is geared towards those engineers looking to better understand the basic concepts behind designing experiments.
➢ Data Analytics Tools and Applications, Dr. Gregory DeYong, Associate Professor, College of Business Administration – SIUC.
This presentation will describe the different types of data analytics tools, discuss data analytics applications and will provide a demonstration of one of the most
widely used data mining software available in the market.
➢ Engagement in a Remote World, Chuck Underwood, Quality Manager, Amentum – Engineering Company.
Remote work became popular during the 2020 to 2022 pandemic that forced the majority of office and knowledge workers to work from home. This session will
examine and review issues and potential solutions to maintain team engagement in the remote workplace environment.
➢ How National and International Standards are Developed, Brenda Bishop, Process Improvement Consultant.
This presentation will inform the audience of how ASQ is involved with the development of International Standards and US standards through ISO and ANSI. It
will describe how a standard progresses from an idea to published document and then maintained throughout its life and what ASQ’s role is in the process and how
you can contribute and benefit from this involvement.
➢ How Shall we Proceed? Case Studies in Quality Management, Gabriel Smith, Quality Manager, John Deere.
Quality practitioners are professional problem solvers. This presentation will explore some specific problems that can occur when managing the quality function
and the necessary courses of action. This session is interactive.
➢ How to Implement a Reliability Program, Kelyn Young, OPEX Manager, Eaton Corporation.
This presentation will provide an overview, insight, and tips on how to implement and develop a reliability program. The main idea is how to make a company
change their culture from reactive to preventive, and then to predicative; and the steps needed to move the whole organization in the implementation of these
directives.
➢ Lean-Sigma Process Optimization in Government Organizations, Kent James, Executive Director, Illuminative
Strategies, Inc.
KEYNOTE PRESENTATION: All government organizations have a significant impact on the most vulnerable members of society. This presentation will explore
and introduce examples of the application and uses of Lean Enterprise in these types of organizations and how to develop a continuous improvement culture to
optimize all the processes.
➢ Lean’s Eight Wastes Simulation, Barton Welker, Senior Process Architect, Illuminative Strategies Inc.
The core of Lean methodology involves the identification and elimination of waste. To help focus efforts in this area, Lean practitioners developed a list of eight
wastes which establish the most likely areas where waste will occur. This presentation will focus on how using a simulation, the wastes in a process can become
visible to employees and consequently, help create the desire for change.
➢ Occupational Safety & Health Trends Update, Lori Amerman, Operations Coordinator, Illinois Manufacturing Excellence
Center (IMEC).
In this session, the presenter will be screening a review of current trends and best practices in the field of occupational safety and health management including the
latest updates for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulatory compliance.
➢ Quality and Value-Added Services, Chris Sons, Process Engineer, PTI Quality Containment Solutions.
When manufacturing and service quality come together – and the special case when the supplier and the customer are the same entity. This presentation will take a
look at the situations that arise when quality doesn’t stop at the end of a production process.
➢ Quality Profiles, Mary Kay Belota, Consultant, MKBelota Consulting, LLC.
In this session, the presenter will compare and contrast quality function positions in the medical device, pharmaceutical and biotherapy industries. Interactive
session to self-assess qualifications and skills versus job requirements.
➢ Reliability at Continental Tire, Stephen Wagner, Mechanical Engineer, Continental Tire Mt. Vernon.
Process reliability is a method for identifying problems, which have significant cost reduction opportunities for improvements. In this session, the presenter will
describe strategies that have been implemented for reliability and improvement of the machines involved in the production process of one of Continental’s largest
tire plants.
➢ SPC – From the Basics to Practical Usage, James Nelson Akers, Quality Manager, Woodward.
This presentation will cover the basic concepts of Statistical Process Control (SPC) as it is defined in the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) SPC reference
manual. The talk includes basic Shewhart statistic calculations, different process control charts and their use, and understanding the importance of having a reliable
measurement system and its impact on your SPC decisions. Real life data examples will be evaluated.
➢ The Cost of Quality (COQ): Applying the PAF Paradigm and Lundall-Juran Quality Model to Strategic Quality
Planning & Project Selection, Dr. John T. Legier Jr., Associate Professor, College of Engineering, Computing, Technology
and Mathematics – SIUC.
This presentation will cover the evaluation and application of the PAF Paradigm (Prevention, Appraisal, and Failure costs) and Lundall-Juran Quality Model in
evaluating costs associated with prevention, appraisal, and failures as a strategic planning approach for evaluating quality costs. Case related scenarios will be
discussed.
➢ Turning Soft / “Light Green” Savings into Hard / “Dark Green” Dollars: The Unspoken Need for Labor Optimization,
Katie Benyo, Client Account Lead, Accumen.
While improvement projects can have significant financial savings, service organizations concentrate on projects that save time (soft or “light green” dollars).
What’s missing? The answer is Labor Optimization, and it does not entail reductions in force (RIF)! This session will cover what Labor Optimization is, what it is
NOT, why it is important to capitalize on the time/labor savings of a process improvement, and the four key components to successful Labor Optimization.
