MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:

The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, April 1, 2023, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale.
U.N. Secretary-General Guterres says: “Our world needs climate action on all fronts—everything, everywhere, all at once.” To disarm the “Climate Time-Bomb” we all have to take action. One step proposed by local organizers and the Carbondale City Council promotes the redesignation of the Shawnee National Forest to the Shawnee National Park and Climate Preserve under the Department of the Interior as a means of preserving the natural resources and mature tree canopy of the Shawnee. While this proposal offers multiple benefits to southern Illinois, the fact that forests naturally store massive amounts of carbon in the soil is critical as we take steps to address climate disruption. Through sequestration, mature forests reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and can counter the effects of climate change through physical cooling.
The 30 X 30 initiative established by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) determined that protecting 30% of the earth’s natural land and aquatic ecosystems by the year 2030 was necessary in the short term, to help mitigate the effects of climate change. With the approach of Earth Day, we recognize that every day needs to be a day devoted to the health of the planet. Implementation of this proposal can be a significant contribution.
The Peace Coalition is joined by Shawnee Forest Defense, the SIU Young Democratic Socialists of America and the Shawnee Green Party in sponsoring this Peace and Justice Vigil.
Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
