MONTHLY PEACE AND JUSTICE VIGIL:

DIPLOMACY AND DE-ESCALATION, NOT WAR OVER UKRAINE

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2022 NOON TO 1:00 PM

The Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois will hold the Monthly Peace and Justice Vigil on Saturday, February 5, 2022, Noon to 1 P.M. at the corner of Main and Illinois Ave., Carbondale. The Peace Coalition joins multiple organizations and individuals around the country to call for cooler rhetoric and effective diplomacy. We must act now to stop the war with Russia over Ukraine, a war that would risk becoming a dangerous conflict between nuclear states. As people residing in the United States, we have a special responsibility to call upon the U.S. government to stop the war with Russia, stop NATO expansion, stop sending weapons to Ukraine and the European Union, obey international laws and the UN Charter, resolve the current conflict within the United Nations Security Council, and de-escalate the threat of a nuclear war.

As in the past, the United States is using the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as the vehicle to threaten war in clear violation of international law and the Charter of United Nations. Even the leaders of Ukraine are calling for calm, they know the death and suffering that war would bring. Let us follow their lead and give up the old Cold War tactics and rhetoric.

The vigil will follow masking and physical distancing guidelines as updated by the state. Please wear a mask. Appropriate signs will be provided, but all are invited to bring their own. The next monthly meeting will be held on ZOOM on February 16, 2022, 6pm. For information about joining, contact georgeannhartzog@gmail.com.
